Ergonomic workbenches
The primary aim of ergonomic design of workbenches in assembly and production plants is to minimise the risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), which are among the most common occupational diseases in Europe and in the Czech Republic. Prolonged periods in unnatural static postures, bending of the torso and head, raised or outstretched arms, highly repetitive movements and a combination of physical strain with monotony lead to pain in the back, neck and shoulders, tendon inflammation, carpal tunnel syndrome, circulatory disorders and chronic spinal conditions. A properly designed workstation significantly reduces these risks, improves blood circulation, reduces fatigue and contributes to higher long-term productivity.

Key ergonomic requirements for a workbench
1. Height adjustment
The work surface must allow the position to be changed dynamically during a shift (sitting – semi-sitting – standing). The optimal adjustment range is 650–1,250 mm. The recommended work surface heights are 630–760 mm for seated work and 900–1,200 mm for standing work. In this way neutral elbow angles (90–110°) are maintained, the shoulders stay relaxed and the spine in its natural position, which reduces pressure on the intervertebral discs and muscular imbalance.
2. Worktop dimensions and layout
The ideal worktop depth is 600–800 mm (most often 700 mm), so that the forearms can rest without reaching forward. The worktop width is chosen according to the nature of the operation (1,200–3,000 mm). Sufficient space for the lower limbs (at least 600 mm) and rounded edges (R ≥ 3–5 mm) are essential. Material and tools must be placed in the zone of comfortable reach (400–600 mm from the body), which eliminates unnecessary movements and forward bending of the trunk.
3. Load capacity and stability
A workbench must offer high load capacity (150–600 kg depending on the type of operation) and absolute stability. Any instability causes compensatory muscle tension and increases the risk of errors and chronic overload.
4. Risk assessment
An ergonomic analysis of a workstation includes a comprehensive assessment of working postures, repetitiveness of movements, local muscle load and the overall layout of the workplace. The priority of the necessary adjustments is set on the basis of the results.
5. Other ergonomic features
- Ergonomic seats with lumbar support and adjustable height.
- Even lighting of the work surface (500–1,000 lx) free of shadows and glare.
- Option of a slight worktop tilt (0–15°).
- Integrated handling aids (roller or ball units) that replace manual handling of loads.
- Optimised material flow and organisational systems placed in the comfort zone.
- Matt worktop surfaces.
Specific requirements by sector
In the automotive industry and on light-industry assembly lines, single-purpose ergonomic workstations with high load capacity and precise adaptation to a specific operation are preferred. In distribution centres, quick height adjustment is the key for packing and dispatch activities. In hygienic environments, ergonomics is combined with requirements for washable materials.
Impact on health and productivity
Long-term exposure to a non-ergonomic workstation significantly increases the risk of chronic musculoskeletal disorders, back, neck and shoulder pain, tendon inflammation and higher absence. A properly designed workstation, by contrast, brings:
- a marked reduction in risky postures and repetitive strain,
- better blood supply to the muscles and lower overall fatigue,
- improved mental concentration and quality of work,
- a decline in occupational diseases and lower healthcare costs,
- higher productivity (up to 20–30% in optimised operations).
Summary
An ergonomically optimised workbench is a basic prerequisite of sustainable production. It meets the requirements of ČSN EN ISO 6385 and respects anthropometric data according to ISO 14738. It allows natural changes of working position, eliminates static overload and protects workers' health while increasing efficiency and satisfaction.
Custom ergonomic tables
We make ergonomic workstations to order from an aluminium kit with clamping slots, so the height, shelves and accessories can be adapted to the specific work. Height adjustment is provided by electrically controlled lifting columns: the stroke is completely smooth and quiet (electric tables ESSE). Ergonomic packing tables are intended for packing and dispatch, and inspection tables and workstations for other operations. You will find parts for tables in the Components, semi-finished parts and table parts category.
We can also provide a fully custom table solution as required: we adapt the worktop dimensions, height, shelves and equipment to how and with what you work at the table.
Frequently asked questions
What work surface height is ergonomic?
The recommended work surface heights are 630–760 mm for seated work and 900–1200 mm for standing work. The optimal adjustment range is 650–1250 mm, so that you can alternate between sitting, semi-sitting and standing during a shift.
Why should a workbench be height-adjustable?
Because the work surface should allow dynamic changes of posture during a shift (sitting – semi-sitting – standing). This keeps the elbows at neutral angles (90–110°), the shoulders relaxed and the spine in its natural position.
How deep and wide should the worktop be?
The ideal depth is 600–800 mm, most often 700 mm, so that the forearms can rest without stretching. The width is chosen according to the operation (1200–3000 mm); there should be at least 600 mm of leg room under the table and the edges should be rounded (R ≥ 3–5 mm).
What load capacity should an ergonomic workbench have?
A high one, 150–600 kg depending on the type of operation, together with absolute stability. Instability causes compensatory muscle tension and increases the risk of errors and overload.
What lighting is suitable for a workbench?
Even lighting of the work surface at 500–1000 lx, free of shadows and glare, together with a matt worktop surface.
Can you make an ergonomic table to measure?
Yes, we can deliver a fully custom table solution to suit your needs. The height is adjusted by electrically operated lifting columns (ESSE tables); you will find packing tables in the category Made-to-measure packing tables and workstations.
