Tool theft protection

Work vans with tools are a sought-after target for thieves. Tools are easy to sell and vehicles stand overnight by the house or in a car park. A fit-out is a second barrier that slows a thief down and makes the job harder for him, but it cannot replace sensible precautions around the vehicle.

What the fit-out can do

  • Lock valuable tools in lockable drawers and cabinets that cannot be seen through the window even when the doors are open.
  • Use pull-out drawers and steel drawers with a catch, from which tools cannot be pulled out quickly.
  • Hide the most valuable items in the storage space under the floor.
  • Add locks on shelving unit doors and security closures on boxes.
  • Have clear marking and an inventory of equipment on the vehicle, for example a list with serial numbers, which makes it easier to recover items if they are found and to deal with the police and the insurer.

What the fit-out cannot replace

Vehicle locks, an alarm, a camera or a tracking device are outside the scope of the fit-out. It pays to combine them. It is also wise not to leave the most valuable items in the vehicle overnight, even if the vehicle is well locked.

Insuring tools

Vehicle insurance usually covers damage to the vehicle, but not always the tools inside. Equipment in the vehicle often needs separate insurance. The better the equipment is stored, the easier it is to prove what was in the vehicle and that it was secured.
