Materials: aluminium, steel, wood and plastic

Every material has its place, and a good fit-out usually combines several. What matters is knowing why each one is chosen.

Aluminium

Aluminium profiles are light, do not rust and are easy to modify. A light structure means the fit-out takes less from the vehicle's payload, so you can carry more tools and material. Because aluminium does not corrode, you do not have to worry about damp or cold. Our profiles have a slot along their entire length and come in a natural or black anodised finish. Cube connectors can be sprayed in any colour.

Steel

Steel is strong and durable, so it suits places with heavy loads, for example drawers with heavy tools or parts. The price of that strength is weight and the need to protect the surface against corrosion. That is why we use steel selectively, where it is needed, not everywhere.

Wood and plywood

Film-faced plywood is a good material for the bases and sides of shelves and for the floor. It is rigid, cuts easily to size and the film protects it from moisture. Film-faced poplar plywood is the standard material of our pull-out platforms. Wood is, however, heavier than plastic and is damaged by prolonged exposure to water, so it pays to choose with regard to what you carry in the vehicle.

Plastic

Plastic shelf panels and plastic boxes are light and do not absorb water. They suit places where you carry moisture-sensitive material or want to reduce the overall weight. Plastic is easy to clean and does not corrode.

How the materials complement each other

A practical assembly looks like this: the load-bearing structure is aluminium, the bases and sides of shelves are plywood or plastic, drawers for the heaviest items are steel and the boxes are plastic. Each part does what it does best. The decision always depends on what you carry and how often, which is why we work it out with you during the design.

A note on comparisons: suppliers quote differing figures for weight savings between materials, and these figures contradict one another because each compares different assemblies. Only a comparison of specific assemblies for a specific vehicle is reliable. For that reason we give no figures in this text.
