How to choose a work fit-out

Why get a work van fit-out

You will use space that is currently going to waste

The load area of a van is large, but without a fit-out it is used only near the floor and near the rear doors. The height, the side walls and the space above the wheel arches remain empty. A fit-out lifts things onto levels, divides the space into zones and opens up pull-outs, so more fits into the same vehicle and nothing has to be rearranged.

You will save the time that is lost most today: search time

Every search for a tool at the bottom of a crate is a paid minute that nobody will make up to you. A fit-out with a fixed place for every item turns searching into simply reaching. The saving does not show up as one big item but as dozens of small decisions during every day.

You will increase safety for yourself and others

Loose tools are a projectile under hard braking. A fit-out holds every item in its own place, in a closed compartment, on a pull-out with locking or in a clamped case. A solid structure also protects the driver from the load shifting towards the cab.

You will protect your equipment from damage

Measuring instruments, cordless tools, optics or musical equipment do not belong in a heap where they knock against each other. Cases and boxes in their places do not turn over, bend or get damp. Instruments last longer and you will not pay for repairs that would never have happened.

You will protect the vehicle too

The floor and walls of the load area suffer when heavy loads slide across them. A fit-out with protective lining prevents scratches, dents and corrosion and helps maintain the value of the vehicle, especially when it is returned from a lease or sold.

You will arrive like a professional

A customer who sees open rear doors with order, tidy drawers and labelled boxes has a different impression from one who sees a heap of things. A clean, well-organised van is the calling card of a company that travels the whole country.

You will adapt it to yourself

Every tradesperson has their own habits, their own way of storing things and their own logic about what they need to have to hand. A good fit-out respects that logic instead of forcing you to adapt to it. That is why our assemblies are built to measure and why anything can be changed, added or rebuilt.

You will find it easier to clean and maintain

Smooth, durable surfaces, removable boxes and a clear structure are quick to clean. In such a vehicle, order maintains itself because every item knows where it belongs.

A fit-out is an investment that pays back

It brings more than comfort. Anyone who does the sums will find that time saved searching, less damaged equipment, faster loading and unloading and a longer vehicle life add up over time. How these items are calculated and what drives the price can be found in the chapter Price and payback.

Four routes to a fit-out: made to measure, modular kit, ready-made set or your own shelving

Made-to-measure fit-out

A solution tailored to a specific vehicle model and a specific job. It starts from the dimensions of your load area, the height of the rear opening, the position of the wheel arches and above all what you carry and in what. Dimensions are to the millimetre according to cases and tools. Anything in the assembly can be moved, enlarged, reduced, rebuilt or left out. We design a 3D model that you can view and adjust until it fits exactly. This is the route for those who want the vehicle to be perfectly adapted.

Modular van kit

A universal set of components organised by vehicle height, from which you put the assembly together yourself or with our help. It works in systems 30, 40 and 45 and each column can have a different number and height of boxes. It suits you when you want a solution that is flexible, expandable over time and independent of one specific model. You can use pre-prepared packages or example assemblies for immediate ordering.

Drawer fit-outs for a specific model

TECNO steel drawer fit-outs are designed precisely for specific models of commercial vehicles and match the actual dimensions of their load area. They suit you when you want a solid, ready-made solution and your equipment fits into drawers.

Your own shelving

Many people consider building shelving themselves from available material. It is possible and for some it is sensible, but it is good to know what you are taking on: responsibility for strength and anchoring, for how the assembly behaves under braking, and for having it properly recorded with the authorities and the insurer. The chapter Registration document, STK inspection, insurance describes what to watch out for.

The most common mistakes when getting a fit-out

  1. The initial brief “so that everything is visible”. Excessive openness of shelves leads to scattered cargo and chaos. Closed or secured compartments are better.
  2. Not accounting for weight. A good-looking but heavy fit-out limits how much you can carry and in the extreme case leads to overloading.
  3. Heavy items up high. Heavy cargo stored high worsens the stability of the vehicle.
  4. Skimping on anchoring. The nicest shelving is useless if it is not firmly connected to the vehicle.
  5. Leaving small items loose. In open compartments, light items become projectiles under braking.
  6. Not preparing for the future. A new job, new tools, a new team member. A structure that cannot be changed soon becomes a limitation.
  7. Ignoring formalities. An unregistered change can lead to problems at the technical inspection or in an insurance claim.
  8. Overlooking access to mandatory equipment and the wheel. A fit-out must not block anything you need to reach quickly.
  9. Copying someone else's design unchanged. What suits a joiner may not suit an electrician. That is why we design around what you carry.
  10. Counting only the purchase price. What matters is the cost over the whole period of use, including the time you save.
